MONK: A Tribute to Thelonious March 5, 2016 at 8:00
In 2006, Sam Walker approached A5A about doing a tribute to Thelonious Monk; an event exploring the complexly brilliant music of Monk, one of America's musical treasures. Since that day we celebrate this brilliant musician with an annual celebration of his life and music. Please join us for this wonderful night of music and tribute to this icon.
About the man:
Thelonious Sphere Monk (b.1917, d.1982) - During his career, Monk composed 70 pieces that remain the standard for jazz music today. Along with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Monk was instrumental in the evolution of BeBop but his influence can be felt in every genre of music. He played on recordings with Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane (originally a member of the Thelonious Monk Quartet); he limited his public appearances to the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival after he retired from touring; the Smithsonian Institute has archived his music, the United States Postal Service issued a stamp with his likeness on it; and in 1964 he appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, only 1 of 3 jazz musicians ever chosen for this honor."I say, play your own way. Don’t play what the public wants. You play what you want and let the public pick up on what you’re doing even if it does take them 15-20 years." Thelonious S. Monk
